Field Advisory: The Birthday Window and the Reopened Case
On the one day a year that makes a closed thread feel open again.
- Advisory No.
- AD-2026-006
- Issued
- March 20, 2026
- In response to
- the approach of a former interest's birthday
- Status
- In Effect
The Institute for Applied Dignity maintains the national Simp Alert Level at ELEVATED for any subject approaching the birthday of a dormant contact. The birthday is the single most reliable pretext on the calendar, because it supplies a reason to message someone the subject otherwise has no reason to message.
I. The Conditions
A birthday notification arrives unbidden and does the inviting. The platform suggests it. Etiquette appears to sanction it. The subject, who has been waiting for a reason, is handed one by the operating system itself.
II. The Mechanism
"Happy birthday" is sent as a greeting and received as a greeting. The subject, however, has filed it as an opening, and waits for the archived conversation to resume from where it was closed. It does not. The greeting is answered with a heart react, which is itself then filed as evidence.
III. Standing Guidance
A birthday message is a courtesy, not a re-application. A case closed in March is not reopened by a calendar reminder in September. Citizens are advised to send the two words or send nothing, and under no circumstances to send the two words and then, an hour later, the paragraph.
IAD Field Data: 76% of "happy birthday" messages to a dormant contact were followed, within 48 hours, by a second message that was not about the birthday.
