The Institute for Applied Dignity is raising the national Simp Alert Level to HIGH for the week surrounding February 14. A date on the calendar is converting ambient, manageable hope into an enforced deadline, with predictable results.
I. The Conditions
The holiday manufactures urgency where none existed. The subject becomes convinced they must "say something" before the 14th, as though a situationship of eleven months can be resolved by a single greeting card delivered on schedule.
II. The Mechanism
A deadline collapses the distance between feeling and disclosure. The grand gesture is aimed at a party who has not confirmed the relationship the gesture assumes. The reservation is for two. The agreement is for one.
III. Standing Guidance
February 14 is a date, not a referendum on your standing. The Institute advises against any overture whose timing is set by a retailer rather than by reciprocity. Do not send the paragraph because the calendar told you to.
IAD Field Data: 88% of Valentine’s overtures were sent to a party the subject was not, by any filing, dating. 0% of recipients had the date circled.
