Talking Stage n.
An indefinite probationary period preceding a relationship that may never be defined. Distinguished from dating by the absence of advancement criteria: there is no review, no promotion, and no posted end date.
The talking stage persists precisely because naming it would force a decision one party benefits from postponing.
Representative usage
Eight months into the "talking stage," he asked where it was going. It was going to month nine.
